Understanding road safety begins with understanding the roads themselves.

Our team recently visited the Kingdom of Bhutan as part of the “National Road Safety Analytics and Recommendations for the Kingdom of Bhutan” project. Through field observations, stakeholder workshops, and data-driven analysis, the project contributes to the development of Bhutan’s national road safety strategy, supporting the country’s Vision Zero ambition to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries on its roads.

Working closely with national stakeholders and consulting partners, the project assessed Bhutan’s existing road safety performance, identified key strengths – such as courteous driving behaviour, widespread use of roundabouts, national maximum speed limit of 50 km/h – and highlighted priority areas where further improvements can help reduce road traffic fatalities.

Beyond technical analysis, the visit provided an opportunity to engage directly with local institutions and decision-makers, ensuring that the proposed recommendations reflect Bhutan’s unique road environment, geography, and long-term development objectives.
